WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (KUNA) -- The Governments of Mexico and the United States reaffirmed on Wednesday their security cooperation, based on the principles of reciprocity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, as well as mutual trust.
"The aim is to work together to dismantle transnational organized crime through enhanced cooperation between our respective national security and law enforcement institutions, and judicial authorities," according to a Joint Statement on Security Cooperation between the United States and Mexico.
"Additionally, we are working to address the illegal movement of people across the border," reads the statement released by the US State Dept.
"This cooperation through specific and immediate actions will strengthen the security along our shared border, halt the trafficking of fentanyl and other illicit drugs, and stop arms trafficking.
"The two governments have established a high-level implementation group to meet regularly and follow-up on mutual commitments and actions taken within their own countries, including measures to counter the cartels, strengthen border security, and eliminate clandestine border tunnels, address illicit financial flows, enhance collaboration to prevent fuel theft, increase inspections, investigations, and prosecutions to stop the flow of drugs and arms.
"Our close coordination has allowed us to secure the border, reduce fentanyl trafficking, and advance intelligence sharing, all within our respective legal frameworks," the statement noted.
"The two governments further intend to strengthen collaboration in public health and coordinate campaigns to prevent the abuse of illicit substances and opioids.
"Both governments reaffirm their determination to cooperate, protect our citizens, and make our communities safer," it added.
At a joint press conference with Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramon de la Fuente in Mexico City, US Secretary of State Rubio said, "I'm very happy that we've reached a level [Audio gap] historic cooperation really over the last eight months."
"Never in the history of both countries have we seen the level of cooperation that we have right now, cooperation at a level that respects integrity and the sovereignty of both countries.," he said.
"When it comes to our cooperation, there's no other government that's cooperating as much as Mexico and President Sheinbaum's administration. We are very appreciative. And we have a lot to do together still when it comes to making progress towards this common goal, so I would like to thank you for that.
"We have spoken many times as we spoke today. President Sheinbaum has spoken to President Trump 14 times. -- We are very focused. As you've seen, the president is focused on crime in our own country.
"There are cities in the US that are extremely dangerous. I live in Washington, obviously, a city that has seen a massive increase in crime and crime committed by minors," Rubio said, noting that the president has deployed federal agencies and the National Guard to the city to ensure security and public order.
