Police, prison vans accident cause death of two police officers in Namibia
(MENAFN) Two police officers succumbed to their injuries on Sunday, a day after a head-on crash between a police van and a prison bus in Namibia, raising the total number of fatalities to 16. Three other individuals remain hospitalized.
According to reports, one police officer and one correctional officer passed away in a Mariental hospital. The collision on Saturday outside Mariental, approximately 269 kilometers (167 miles) south of the capital, Windhoek, initially claimed 14 lives.
Authorities stated that 19 people were aboard the two vehicles at the time of the accident. The police van carried six passengers, including five officers and one civilian, while the correctional service bus held 13 officers.
Officials urged the public not to share graphic images or videos from the crash scene. “The ministry strongly appeals to members of the public to refrain from circulating distressing and sensitive images and videos taken from the accident scene out of respect for the deceased, the injured, and the families,” a minister said.
Local media reported that Namibia’s state-backed vehicle insurance program will cover funeral expenses and medical care for the three surviving victims.
