Trump wants nuclear weapons agreement with Russia, China

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington aims to reach a nuclear arms reduction agreement with Russia and China, revealing that he discussed denuclearization with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their recent meeting in Alaska.

“We would like to denuclearize. It’s too much power, and we talked about that as well,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office. He added that discussions also covered missiles and other related issues, and that he hopes to involve China in future agreements. “We have the most, Russia has the second most, and China has third. But China is way behind, though they’ll catch us in five years,” he said.

Trump did not clarify the source of his estimates regarding the three nations’ nuclear arsenals. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia has roughly 2,591 warheads in storage and 1,718 deployed, compared with 1,930 in storage and 1,770 deployed for the US. China is estimated to have around 576 total warheads, with only 24 deployed.

The president also noted that he has continued communication with Putin following the Alaska summit on August 15. Reflecting on the Ukraine conflict, Trump admitted he initially thought it would be easy to resolve but expressed frustration over ongoing violence: “Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation. And then, unfortunately, a bomb is loaded up into Kiev or someplace, and then I get very angry about it. I think we’re going to get the war done. It’s tough.”
