Medic group states Thousands will die in Sudan
(MENAFN) Thousands of people in Sudan’s war-torn North Darfur are at risk of dying due to severe shortages of vital medicines, the Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) warned Tuesday. The group said hospitals in the regional capital, El Fasher, are running critically low on supplies, raising fears of a worsening health emergency.
“The crisis is aggravated by the surge in illnesses and injuries, alongside the inability of medical staff to meet patients’ needs,” the SDN stated.
Sudan has been engulfed in civil war since April 2023, when fighting erupted in Khartoum between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has since spiraled into what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.
On Wednesday, international mediators—including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, the UAE, the US, the African Union, and the UN—appealed to both sides to lift restrictions on aid delivery, particularly in North Darfur and Kordofan, to allow humanitarian access.
The SDN also accused the RSF of killing nine civilians—including five children and four women—during a bombing of Abu Shouk displacement camp in El Fasher on Wednesday night, which left 18 others wounded. A day earlier, it reported that RSF fighters and allied militias attacked the village of al-Ghabshan al-Maramrah, looting and torching homes as well as the only health center, killing seven people and injuring 13.
“These atrocities reflect a systematic campaign of killings and forced displacement carried out by the RSF in areas under its control,” the group said.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese army has accused the RSF of receiving support from foreign mercenaries, including Colombians allegedly backed by the UAE. Abu Dhabi has dismissed the claims as unfounded.
