Jordan, Iraq Extend Power Supply Agreement For One Year

Amman, Aug. 17 (Petra) -National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) announced Sunday extension of an agreement to supply Iraq with electricity from the Jordanian grid for an additional year, as part of strengthening bilateral energy cooperation.
The announcement followed a meeting at NEPCO's headquarters in Amman between its Director General Sufyan Batainah and Riad Aribi, Director General of the General Company for Electricity Transmission in the Central Region, alongside the accomapnying delegation.
Batainah said the extension came at Iraq's request and includes continued supply of electricity to Iraq's western Rutba area until Sept. 27, 2025, or until the completion of electrification of the Jordan-Iraq interconnection line at 400 kV.
Noting Jordan's "readiness" to begin operating the new line from Risha substation, he added that joint efforts are aim to operate the facility at 400 kV as a preparatory step for the two countries' synchronized power interconnection.
Batainah said the project aims to strengthen energy security, maintain both countries' grid stability and support bilateral cooperation and integration.
For its part, the Iraqi delegation expected that all technical works for the interconnection project on Iraqi territory would be completed within six months from now, which paves the way for actual operation at 400 kV.
