US representative describes Europe's AI as 'model of fear, overregulation'
(MENAFN) A US official on Tuesday described Europe’s approach to artificial intelligence (AI) as a “model of fear and excessive regulation,” encouraging Asian nations to collaborate with the United States instead.
Michael Kratsios, policy director at the White House Office of Science and Technology, addressed this during a digital forum at an APEC AI ministerial meeting near Seoul. He told attendees that countries face a choice: either adopt Europe’s restrictive model, risking stagnation, or embrace US technology and infrastructure for AI innovation.
Kratsios emphasized that future breakthroughs will rely on American technology and that political freedom and independence, not global governance or technocratic control, should drive progress.
He also acknowledged that APEC governments aim to protect citizens’ sensitive data, which limits the use of closed proprietary systems. Therefore, the US is supporting open-source AI models to empower developers and potentially establish industry standards.
