S. Korea army completes removing loudspeaker with N. Korea boarder

(MENAFN) South Korea’s military has completed the dismantling of propaganda loudspeakers installed along the border with North Korea, a gesture intended to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

According to a news agency, about 20 loudspeakers located in front-line areas were fully removed by Tuesday afternoon, just a day after the operation began. The dismantling follows President Lee Jae Myung’s order from nearly two months ago to suspend border broadcasts in a bid to improve relations with the North.

While South Korea has taken this step, its military noted that North Korea has not yet begun removing its own loudspeakers. However, Pyongyang had already suspended its loudspeaker campaigns since June, suggesting a possible cooling of tensions.

The South had resumed its border broadcasts in June 2024 after a six-year hiatus, reacting to North Korea’s repeated provocations—most notably the launch of balloons carrying trash across the border.

The removal of the loudspeakers signals a tentative but hopeful step toward reducing hostilities between the two Koreas.
