Germans have low willingness to defend their nation in case of war

(MENAFN) A recent poll has found that only a small portion of Germans are ready to defend their country with weapons if it were to face a military attack. According to the survey, just 16% of respondents said they would “definitely” be willing to take up arms, while another 22% said they would “probably” do so, making a total of 38% potentially prepared to fight.

The survey, conducted by the Forsa Institute, also highlighted widespread hesitation towards military involvement. A majority of 59% said they would “probably not” or “definitely not” be willing to defend Germany in such a situation. This reluctance was particularly pronounced among women, with 72% expressing unwillingness to engage in military defense.

Commissioned by a major German media group, the poll collected responses from about 1,000 citizens between July 28 and 29.

The findings come amid Germany’s increased defense spending following the 2022 outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as warnings from intelligence and military officials about a possible Russian attack on a NATO member within the next five years.
