Syrian government formally asks from Türkiye to assist in enhancing defense, fight terrorism

(MENAFN) The Syrian government has officially requested Türkiye’s assistance to enhance its defense capabilities and combat terrorism, with a particular focus on fighting ISIS (Daesh), according to sources from Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry on Wednesday.

In response to this appeal, Türkiye is continuing to provide training, advisory, and technical support to help build Syria’s defense infrastructure. The ministry emphasized that Türkiye’s primary objective is to uphold Syria’s territorial integrity, support its political unity, and contribute to lasting regional peace.

Commenting on recent unrest in Syria’s Suwayda province and Israeli airstrikes on Damascus, Turkish defense sources noted that Israel's escalating attacks have intensified tensions between the Druze community in Suwayda and the central government.

Türkiye reaffirmed its commitment to Syria’s stability, sovereignty, and the fight against terrorist organizations.

Clashes broke out on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and Druze militias in Suwayda, followed by Israeli air raids on Syrian military targets in Damascus and other areas. Israel claimed the strikes aimed to protect Druze communities, though most Druze leaders in Syria have rejected foreign intervention and expressed their allegiance to a unified Syrian state. A ceasefire was declared on Saturday.

Since the removal of former leader Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, Syria’s new government has been actively working to restore order and authority throughout the country.
