Study Reveals UV Tech Reduces Respiratory Infections in Care Homes
(MENAFN) A widely available ultraviolet light technology has been shown to significantly reduce respiratory infections among residents in elderly care homes, according to new research released Tuesday.
Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study reported that germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) devices lowered overall viral respiratory infections by over 12% across four nursing facilities compared to standard conditions.
Researchers deployed the GUV systems in aged care homes across South Australia, where the devices emitted UVC light to neutralize airborne viruses and bacteria, according to a statement from Flinders University.
"Some of the key advantages of germicidal ultraviolet air-treatment appliances are that they are easily installed into existing facilities and cost-effective to use," said lead author Andrew Shoubridge of Flinders University and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.
Senior author Geraint Rogers emphasized the practical benefits of the technology, noting its discreet design and potential to safeguard vulnerable populations.
Over the course of two years, the study demonstrated that GUV devices are safe for residents, adaptable to various types of facilities, and successful in reducing airborne pathogens within actual elder care environments.
Conducted over two years, the study confirmed that the devices were safe for use around elderly residents, adaptable to various facility layouts, and highly effective in reducing airborne pathogens under real-life conditions.
With more than 250,000 Australians currently living in aged care, the researchers suggest this technology could serve as a critical tool in preventing seasonal respiratory illness and mitigating risks during future pandemics—complementing current infection control strategies.
