Lithuania pushes proposal to ban Russians from politics
(MENAFN) Lawmakers in Lithuania are pushing a proposal that would prevent individuals with Russian citizenship from participating in the country’s political sphere. The proposed legislation, introduced by the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, aims to block Russian nationals from becoming founders, members, or financial backers of political parties. Additionally, the measure would obligate all political organizations to reveal whether any of their members hold multiple citizenships.
The bill's backers argue that citizens of countries labeled by Lithuania as "hostile states"—specifically Russia, Belarus, and China—present a potential risk to national security.
“Citizens of hostile states, particularly those connected to Russian oligarchs, may exert influence through political parties,” bill co-author Dalia Asanaviciute stated. She further noted, “Russia allocates significant resources to interfere in democratic and political processes globally, with a focus on our region.”
Reports suggest the legislation was partly motivated by revelations that Alvydas Brusokas, who co-founded and financially supported the Dawn of Nemunas political party, holds both Lithuanian and Russian citizenship.
