Film directors are obsessed of Ireland

(MENAFN) Once a place with limited prospects for filmmakers, Ireland is now booming as a film and TV production powerhouse. Irish director Dearbhla Walsh recalls the 1980s as a time when “to aspire to be a director was almost a fantasy.” Today, the landscape has dramatically changed.

Ireland has gained global recognition for both homegrown productions and as a filming destination for major international projects. Shows like Bad Sisters, Normal People, and Bodkin have showcased Irish talent and scenery to worldwide audiences. Bad Sisters star Sharon Horgan earned her second consecutive Emmy nomination this year, while Irish films like The Banshees of Inisherin and The Quiet Girl earned Oscar nods in 2023.

The country’s success is also fueled by competitive production costs. “It’s cheaper to bring 100 people to Ireland,” one insider remarked, pointing to the financial and creative incentives that attract global studios.

With rising stars like Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal gaining international acclaim, Walsh sums it up: “Ireland is having a moment… [We’re] able to create from home and sell stories about Ireland.”
