(MENAFN) Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes in the eastern Lebanese region of Baalbek on Tuesday, marking a new breach of the existing ceasefire, according to reports.

The warplanes reportedly targeted areas near the towns of Shmustar and Wadi Umm Ali, as stated by Lebanon’s state news agency. At the time of reporting, there was no confirmed information regarding casualties or the extent of the damage.

The Israeli military claimed the strikes were directed at Hezbollah-related sites in the region. However, Hezbollah has not issued any response to the accusations.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which intensified into open warfare last September, has continued despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November. Since then, Israeli forces have launched frequent strikes, particularly in southern Lebanon, citing Hezbollah activity as justification.

Lebanese officials have recorded nearly 3,000 ceasefire violations by Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 236 people and injuring over 540.

According to the ceasefire terms, Israel was obligated to withdraw all forces from southern Lebanon by January 26. However, after Tel Aviv declined to follow through, the deadline was extended to February 18. Despite the extension, Israeli troops continue to operate from five outposts near the border.
