Explosives-Laden Drones Target Oil Field in Northern Iraq
(MENAFN) Two drones carrying explosives crashed Monday evening at the Khurmala oil field located in Erbil province within Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, local officials confirmed.
The regional Directorate General of Counter Terrorism reported that the drones struck the oil site at 8:20 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. local time (1720 and 1725 GMT), respectively.
Authorities confirmed there were no injuries, and no faction has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the assault.
The Security Media Cell, linked to the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, issued a statement clarifying the attack resulted only in property damage. They added that coordination efforts are underway to thoroughly investigate the incident.
Drone strikes have surged across Iraq in recent weeks. The Kurdish administration frequently accuses pro-Iranian militias of orchestrating these attacks—a claim Baghdad’s federal government consistently denies.
Earlier on Monday, before dawn, an explosive drone was intercepted and destroyed near Erbil International Airport, which houses a base for the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS. This follows a pattern earlier this month when another drone was downed near the same airport, as well as a separate drone being shot down near the Kurdish Peshmerga forces’ base in northern Kirkuk province.
