(MENAFN) A significant earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck near Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands region on Monday, according to both the German Centre for Georesearch (GEOFON) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Initially, GEOFON had recorded the tremor as a stronger magnitude 7, but the reading was later revised downward.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 167 kilometers (103 miles) from the city of Tual in Indonesia’s Maluku province. The quake originated at a depth of about 65.7 kilometers (40 miles) beneath the earth’s surface, which is considered moderately deep for seismic activity.

Despite the earthquake’s considerable strength, authorities have not yet received any reports indicating casualties or significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Local emergency services and officials continue to monitor the situation closely to assess any potential aftereffects or risks to the population.
