Lebanon Calls for Extension of UN Peacekeeping Mandate

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized the crucial role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday, urging its mandate to be extended for another year to sustain peace and stability in southern Lebanon.

During a meeting with a European Union delegation led by EU Ambassador to Lebanon Sandra De Waele, Salam highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to asserting its authority across all of Lebanon, in accordance with the Taif Agreement and the Ministerial Statement, as reported by a local news agency.

Salam also provided an update on Lebanon’s ongoing reform efforts, outlining key initiatives the government plans to implement in the near future. These measures, he noted, are central to addressing the country's most pressing challenges.

In turn, the EU delegation reaffirmed its strong dedication to Lebanon, pledging continued support for the nation's reform agenda, with a focus on vital sectors such as economic, financial, and judicial reforms, according to the news agency.
