S. Korea’s President Pushes for U.S. Trade Deal, North Korea Talks
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced Thursday his commitment to negotiating a "mutually beneficial" trade agreement with the United States and pursuing talks with North Korea aimed at establishing "peace and coexistence" on the Korean Peninsula, according to local media reports.
During a press conference marking his first month in office, Lee stated that his administration would prioritize pragmatic diplomacy in trade discussions with the US, seeking outcomes that align with South Korea's national interests, media reported.
The comments came amid ongoing discussions between Seoul and Washington to address the 25% reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, with a looming deadline of July 8.
In addition, Lee highlighted his administration's early efforts to foster peace by halting the deployment of propaganda loudspeakers along the border with North Korea. He expressed optimism that this gesture could pave the way for renewed dialogue with Pyongyang.
"Just as North Korea responded to the government's recent preemptive suspension of propaganda broadcasts, a virtuous cycle of peace is possible," he stated.
"We will reopen inter-Korean communication and pave the way for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and cooperation," he added.
Lee took office last month following his victory in a snap presidential election, which was triggered by the impeachment and ousting of his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, after Yoon
