J&K Must Regain Its Top Tourism Spot: CM

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday urged all stakeholders to join hands in restoring Jammu and Kashmir's position as India's premier tourist destination, saying it was a shared responsibility that must be met with urgency and vision.

“It is the collective duty of the government and tourism stakeholders to restore Jammu and Kashmir's position as the country's pre-eminent tourist destination and ensure it remains so,” Omar said while addressing the J&K Tourism Revival Dialogue organised jointly by the Department of Tourism and FICCI at SKICC in Srinagar.

Emphasising the need for consistent efforts, Omar said,“It is binding on us to do everything in our power to ensure that Jammu and Kashmir goes back to its position as the pre-eminent tourist destination - and then stays there.”

Reflecting on the region's fragile tourism climate, the chief minister cited the drastic shift in mood earlier this year.“From flying over Dal Lake and seeing hundreds of shikaras on April 21, to seeing none just days later - it was a brutal reminder that the past can intrude into our present, and God forbid, our future,” he said, referring to the fallout from the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

Omar acknowledged that while most destinations enjoy long-term planning, J&K's volatility demands adaptability.“Unlike most other places where tourism planning can be done years ahead, here we plan week to week. But still we plan, and still we persist,” he remarked.

He expressed appreciation for the tourism fraternity and FICCI for continuing to support the region through both prosperous and difficult times.

The chief minister also announced a key initiative named SPREAD, aimed at developing nine new tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir, with expected support from international funding agencies.“We can't confine ourselves to three or four destinations,” he said.“Jammu offers pilgrimage and border tourism; Kashmir offers scenic, cultural and adventure tourism. Together, we can build a more holistic tourism ecosystem.”

Highlighting the transformative role of connectivity, Omar noted the scenic value of the new railway infrastructure.“Travelling by train through tunnels and the world's highest rail bridge into the Valley is a breathtaking experience. We may not have a direct Delhi-Srinagar line yet, but that day isn't far,” he said.

He also outlined the government's focus on infrastructure and emerging tourism sectors.“We're close to completing a world-class conference facility in Gulmarg to supplement venues like SKICC. MICE tourism, golf, films, and destination weddings are critical components of our future strategy,” he added.

Calling for active partnership from the industry, Omar said,“We value your support, your suggestions, and most importantly your criticism when needed. Together, we can build a resilient and vibrant tourism sector that not only brings visitors but makes them want to return.”

The event also saw the release of Golfing in Paradise, a book authored by Atul Dir, celebrating Jammu and Kashmir's emerging profile as a premier golf tourism destination.
