S. Korea Court Blocks Arrest Warrant for Ousted President Yoon

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, a South Korean court dismissed a request to issue an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk-yeol, which had been filed just a day earlier by a special counsel probing Yoon’s brief enforcement of martial law, multiple media outlets reported.

The special investigation team, led by independent counsel Cho Eun-suk, revealed that the Seoul Central District Court turned down the warrant after Yoon’s legal representatives assured that he would voluntarily appear for questioning if summoned by the special counsel.

The special prosecutor’s office scheduled Yoon and his attorney for questioning at 9:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Yoon had declined to respond to his third police summons on June 19, which sought his questioning on allegations that he ordered the presidential security service to obstruct an arrest attempt in January and instructed the deletion of information from security phones issued to three military commanders.

Yoon was detained at the presidential office on January 15 and formally indicted while in custody on January 26, accused of orchestrating an insurrection. However, he was released on March 8 after prosecutors opted not to appeal the court’s decision to grant his release.

Earlier, on April 4, the Constitutional Court upheld an impeachment motion against Yoon related to his failed attempt to impose martial law in December, officially removing him from the presidency.
