NATO Secretary General Welcomes Canada's Commitment To Boosting Defense Spending

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, June 10 (KUNA) -- NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, on Tuesday, welcomed Canada's announcement to increase its defense spending, emphasizing that all member states are working to enhance their capabilities to ensure the security and stability of the NATO alliance.
In a post on the platform X, Rutte welcomed the announcement from the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, stipulating that Canada will commit to meeting the two percent defense spending target of GDP this year, adding that all allies are stepping up efforts to maintain a strong NATO.
Prime Minister Carney announced a comprehensive plan to modernize Canada's armed forces, including major investments in new submarines, aircraft, ships, armored vehicles, artillery systems, radar, and drones.
He stressed that the long-overdue equipment will be fully upgraded or replaced using Canadian steel, aluminum, and labor.
The move comes ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in the Hague later this June, which is expected to focus on strengthening collective defense and addressing growing global security challenges.
Also, the US administration is reportedly working to secure an agreement to raise its own defense spending to five percent of GDP, with President Donald Trump expected to announce the decision formally during the summit. (end)
