Petra, May 29 (Petra) – A Spanish media delegation visited the ancient city of Petra on Thursday to explore its tourism potential and promote Jordan as a safe destination rich in cultural and historical experiences.
Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), Faris Braizat, welcomed the delegation, stressing the role of international media in portraying Jordan as a stable and secure tourism destination. He noted that Petra remains one of the most popular sites for European travelers, particularly Spanish tourists, who rank among the top nationalities visiting the Red-Rose City.
Braizat underscored that Petra's significance extends beyond its status as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The PDTRA continues to introduce diverse tourism experiences such as hiking trails, immersive cultural programs, and the Bedouin House, which allows visitors to engage with the traditional Bedouin way of life.
He highlighted Jordan's multifaceted tourism offerings ranging from cultural and religious tourism to adventure, wellness, and eco-tourism positioning the country as an open-air museum that caters to a broad spectrum of visitor interests.
He also noted that the Bedouin culture of Petra and Wadi Rum has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2008, emphasizing the importance of integrating local heritage into the tourism experience.
As part of ongoing international cooperation, Braizat said the PDTRA has signed twinning agreements with global tourist destinations that also feature among the New Seven Wonders of the World. These partnerships, such as the one with Spain's Alhambra Palace and Generalife, aim to facilitate knowledge exchange and support joint tourism and cultural initiatives.
The Spanish delegation toured Petra's major archaeological landmarks and was briefed on the Authority's plans to enhance the site's tourism infrastructure. These efforts fall within the framework of the Economic Modernization Vision 2023–2033, which aims to boost Jordan's profile on the global tourism map.
The visit was organized in cooperation with the Jordan Tourism Board as part of ongoing promotional campaigns targeting European and international markets. It comes amid regional challenges affecting the tourism sector, particularly those stemming from the war on Gaza.
The PDTRA has recently hosted media delegations from France, Poland, and Germany, among others. The Authority continues to work with global media outlets and agencies to promote Petra's cultural and tourism potential.
