South Korea, U.S. Launch New Operation to Locate Korean War Remains
(MENAFN) South Korea and the United States have launched a new operation to locate the remains and personal effects of soldiers who died during the Korean War, the South Korean Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The six-week recovery mission is underway in the Mungyeong region, the reported crash site of a U.S. F-51D fighter jet from the 1950–53 conflict, according to a news agency.
Officials from both the South Korean Defense Ministry and the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) are working together to retrieve parts of the downed aircraft. These efforts aim to assist in identifying the jet’s pilot.
The agency noted that similar recovery attempts last year were unsuccessful.
Over 1.7 million American service members were deployed during the Korean War, resulting in more than 36,000 fatalities. Nearly 7,500 U.S. troops are still listed as missing.
