Erdogan declares Türkiye happy to presume mediating Ukraine war
(MENAFN) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reaffirmed Türkiye’s readiness to continue its role as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, praising the latest peace talks held in Istanbul as a significant step toward ending the war.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Erdogan highlighted the importance of the recent meeting between Russian and Ukrainian delegations—the first direct dialogue between the two sides since 2022. He emphasized that Türkiye is actively working toward peace, not just calling for an end to the conflict, but also offering solutions, facilitating discussions, and creating opportunities for dialogue.
“Our strongest wish is to achieve a concrete result from these peace efforts,” Erdogan said, as quoted by TRT Haber. He stressed that Türkiye is committed to keeping diplomatic channels open and supporting continued negotiations, asserting that a military resolution to the war is not viable.
At the two-hour meeting in Istanbul, both sides agreed on a major prisoner exchange and shared preliminary ideas for a potential ceasefire, with discussions set to continue in future talks.
Since 2022, Türkiye has played a central role in efforts to mediate the conflict, hosting early negotiations and regularly facilitating prisoner swaps. The initial peace talks hosted by Ankara reportedly collapsed following outside influence, with Moscow claiming that former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson encouraged Ukraine to reject a settlement and continue fighting.
Russia has maintained its openness to peace talks and a possible ceasefire, but has raised concerns that Kyiv might exploit any pause in fighting to rebuild its military strength and receive additional Western weapons.
