Brazil, Chile Condemn Global Trade Wars, Forge Deeper Ties
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Chilean President Gabriel Boric renewed their commitment to multilateralism and regional unity during a press conference on Tuesday, condemning global trade wars.
The leaders criticized U.S. protectionist policies and advocated for stronger bonds among South American countries.
Lula called for the reinforcement of regional institutions and questioned why Latin America had not reached the technological development of more advanced nations, suggesting U.S. policies as a key factor.
In support, Boric emphasized Chile's opposition to the "politicization of trade" and its commitment to strategic independence in international relations. "We believe in friendship among South American countries and free trade that benefits our people," he said.
Boric highlighted the expanding trade relationship between Chile and Brazil, noting that it now exceeds Chile's trade with most European nations. He pointed out the potential for growth in sectors like investment, technology, transportation, and financial services.
The leaders also unveiled new bilateral agreements in defense, public security, agriculture, culture, and entrepreneurship. Boric accepted an invitation from Lula to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for July 6-7.
As a symbol of their deepening ties, both leaders emphasized progress on a bi-oceanic corridor project, designed to connect Brazil's Atlantic coast with Chile's Pacific ports through northern Argentina and Paraguay.
