Trump commands his portrait gets removed
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has called for the immediate removal of his portrait from the Colorado State Capitol, criticizing the painting as “the worst” and accusing state leaders of intentionally distorting his image. His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the White House and Colorado’s Democratic-led government.
In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump slammed Colorado Governor Jared Polis, stating that he “should be ashamed of himself” for displaying a portrait that was “purposefully distorted” beyond anything he had ever seen. He added that many Colorado residents had complained about the artwork and insisted he would rather have no portrait at all than keep the current one.
The painting, created by British-born Colorado-based artist Sarah A. Boardman, has been displayed in the Capitol since 2019, during Trump’s first term. Boardman, who also painted Barack Obama’s portrait for the state Capitol, bases her work on photographs rather than live sittings. While Trump praised the Obama portrait as “wonderful,” he strongly condemned his own.
In his post, Trump also criticized Governor Polis for being “extremely weak” on crime, specifically citing the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which he claimed had “practically taken over” Aurora, Colorado’s third-largest city. The US designated the group a foreign terrorist organization in February, and earlier this month, Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act to deport nearly 300 alleged gang members to El Salvador.
In response, Polis’ office issued a statement expressing surprise that the president was “such an aficionado of our Colorado state Capitol and its artwork.” The statement, cited by multiple media outlets, added that the state is “always looking for opportunities to improve the visitor experience” but did not confirm whether the portrait would be removed.
Colorado, which has backed Democratic candidates in five consecutive presidential elections—including Kamala Harris in 2024—has frequently clashed with Trump’s policies on immigration, healthcare, education, and gun control. State Attorney General Phil Weiser has filed multiple lawsuits opposing Trump administration policies.
