UN head supports US-Russia deal on Ukraine, Black Sea navigation

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his approval of the recent declaration by US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding a ceasefire on energy facilities strikes and ongoing talks for securing Black Sea navigation routes.

In a statement from Farhan Haq, the UN Deputy Spokesperson, Guterres acknowledged the deal on temporary halt to hostilities aimed at suspending attacks on energy-related targets, along with plans to extend the ceasefire to the Black Sea.

He referred to these measures as “important confidence-building measures” that could play a role in advancing de-escalation initiatives.

The UN chief voiced his hope that these agreements would lay the groundwork for a “just, comprehensive and lasting peace” that upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

He further emphasized the importance of ensuring unhindered and safe navigation in the Black Sea under international law, recognizing it as a key measure to strengthening global food security and ensuring the stability of supply chains.

Guterres has steadily championed the principle of free navigation in the Black Sea and continues to be actively involved in the ongoing implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the UN and Russia regarding global food security, according to the statement.
