M23 Rebels Take Control of Walikale in Eastern DR Congo

(MENAFN) The M23 rebel party, which is central to the ongoing war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, took control of the city of Walikale on Wednesday, a mineral-rich area in North Kivu district, based on a news agency citing regional media.

The rebels, who are believed to have backing from the Rwandan military, seized the city with minimal resistance, as reported by a news agency.

This development occurred just one day after Congolese Leader Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan Leader Paul Kagame called for an urgent ceasefire and a complete halt to hostilities during discussions in Doha, Qatar.

According to local sources, Walikale had been under threat for several days before its capture, with the rebels engaging in intense combat with government forces and the Wazalendo, a civilian militia group allied with the Congolese army. These clashes prompted many residents to flee to safer areas.

Walikale, situated about 125 kilometers (78 miles) northwest of Goma, the eastern provincial capital captured by the rebels in January, is known for its substantial tin deposits.

Since December, the M23 rebel group has escalated its offensive in eastern Congo, seizing Goma as well as the provincial capital of Bukavu as part of its ongoing campaign.
