Underground Water Level Falls Sharply In Some Provinces

KABUL (Pajhwok): The underground water level has fallen by up to five metres in the past year in some provinces of the country.

The Ministry of energy and Water (MoEW) linked the drop to the misuse of water in some agricultural and industrial areas as well as lack of water-injecting systems.

In a post on its X account, the ministry said the Department of Water Resources monitored last year the underground water level in 13 major cities of in line with a plan.

The result of the study indicates the underground water level plummeted significantly in Kabul and the capitals of Balkh, Bamyan, Herat, Maidan Wardak and Kandahar provinces.

The declining underground water level was tied to misuse and lack of a system that feeds water back to the ground.

This comes as a number of residents of Kabul and other cities complain about potable water shortages.
