Bavaria requests from German health system to get ready for war
(MENAFN) Bavarian health Minister Judith Gerlach has urged the German government to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system to ensure it can function effectively in the event of a military conflict. She cited a perceived threat from Russia and concerns over a potential shift in U.S. security commitments under President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung published on Monday, Gerlach argued that Germany must go beyond simply reinforcing its military, calling for a comprehensive “Civil Operational Plan Germany” to prepare for various emergencies, including war.
She stressed that in a crisis, the healthcare system would need to provide medical services not only for over 80 million civilians but also for injured military personnel. Gerlach also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Germany and the EU have the capability to produce essential medicines and medical supplies independently.
To address potential staff shortages in hospitals during wartime, she suggested that the government consider introducing mandatory civilian service alongside military conscription.
Moscow has repeatedly dismissed claims that it poses a military threat to NATO or EU countries, calling such accusations baseless fearmongering used to justify increased defense spending. Russian officials have also criticized the EU’s growing militarization, warning that it escalates tensions and undermines peace efforts in Ukraine.
