Yemeni Authorities Report Arrival Of 180 African Migrants
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
ADEN, March 19 (KUNA) -- Yemen's Ministry of Interior announced that Police in Shabwah Governorate, eastern Yemen, have reported the arrival of 18-0 African migrants on the shores of Rudum district via a smuggling boat - the second in a week in the same area.
According to a statement by the ministry, the migrants arrived aboard a boat named Al-Farouq on the shores of Rudum district.
The group included 128 Ethiopian nationals, nearly half of whom were women, and 52 Somali migrants.
The statement further noted that the boat was operated by a crew of three Somali sailors who illegally entered Yemeni territorial waters, and authorities have since begun monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures regarding the migrants.
This follows an earlier report by the Yemeni Interior Ministry on Saturday, confirming the arrival of 194 African migrants on Shabwah's shores, highlighting a continued influx of refugees into Yemen amid its ongoing economic, security, and humanitarian challenges.
Yemen's coastline sees thousands of African migrants arriving each month aboard smuggling boats, despite the risks and frequent tragedies, the latest incident occurred on March 7, when the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 186 African migrants were missing after their boats capsized during a perilous journey off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti.
The UN agency recorded more than 60,000 African migrants arriving on Yemen's shores in 2024 alone, using the country as a transit point to reach Gulf nations.
Despite ongoing efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and improve migrant safety, IOM has documented 3,435 deaths and disappearances along this migration route since 2014, including 1,416 cases of drowning. (end)
