Europol: AI 'fundamentally' transforms organized crime

(MENAFN) Europol has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is drastically transforming organized crime by automating and broadening criminal activities, as it also aids criminals in evading detection by law enforcement.

In its Serious and Organized Crime Threat Assessment report released Tuesday, the EU’s law enforcement agency stated: “The same qualities that make AI revolutionary — accessibility, adaptability and sophistication — also make it a powerful tool for criminal networks.”

Criminals are leveraging AI to increase the efficiency and scale of their operations, with generative AI enabling them to expand their reach to access a wider audience through multi-lingual messages. AI-generated voice replication and video impersonations generated by AI are also facilitating new types of scam and fraudulent identity use.

Moreover, AI’s ability to automate processes is enhancing the creation of advanced malware, further streamlining criminal activities, according to Europol.

Reports released by Europol also warned that the rise of fully autonomous AI could lead to the creation of entirely AI-operated criminal networks, ushering in a new era of organized crime.
