South Korean Police Plans to Deploy 14,000 Riot Officers
(MENAFN) South Korean authorities announced on Wednesday that they have decided to spread 14,000 riot police officers in the capital, Seoul, to manage potential disturbances on the day the Constitutional Court delivers its verdict on the impeachment of Leader Yoon Suk Yeol.
This impeachment stems from his brief declaration of martial law in December of the previous year.
According to a Korean news agency, which cited police sources, the number of officers represents approximately 60 percent of the nation’s riot police force. These officers will be mobilized under a high-level security alert to address any possible unrest.
Initially, the police had planned to send 12,000 officers, but the figure was increased to 14,000 to ensure a more effective response to unexpected events. These could include large-scale protests or potential attacks on significant institutions, such as the court and its judges.
The Constitutional Court, which concluded the impeachment trial of President Yoon regarding his martial law declaration on December 3, is expected to announce its long-awaited decision this week.
Under the law, the impeachment can only be upheld if at least six out of the eight judges agree. Should the court decide to uphold the impeachment, a new presidential election must be organized within 60 days.
