Those Responsible For Afghanistan Withdrawal Will Be Held Accountable: Pentagon

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Sean Parnell, the new spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense, stated that all those responsible for the withdrawal from Afghanistan will be held accountable.

On Monday, in his first press briefing, he told reporters that witnessing the surrender of Afghanistan to the Taliban in that manner was very difficult for him. He stated that the human costs of the Afghanistan war had been heavy. He added,“I lost 30 of my friends in this war. Now, I ask myself, what was all this sacrifice for?”

He emphasized that the U.S. must decisively win any war. According to him, otherwise, the new generation of American soldiers will ask what the war's achievements were.

Parnell called the withdrawal of U.S. troops“irresponsible.” He criticized the previous administration's strategy and said that President Donald Trump and the new Secretary of Defense emphasized clear objectives, a specific exit strategy, and a precise definition of victory.

He also called for accountability from senior officials. Parnell stated,“If a soldier loses their weapon, they are held accountable. Senior officials must also be held accountable for such critical decisions.”

The events surrounding the withdrawal from Afghanistan continue to generate debate, with many calling for greater transparency and responsibility from those in charge. As the spokesperson for the Department of Defense, Parnell's statements mark the beginning of a renewed effort to address the consequences of the withdrawal.

The U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 led to the fall of Kabul and the return of the Taliban to power. This decision sparked widespread criticism, with the Biden administration accused of lacking a proper plan. Now, the new Pentagon spokesperson emphasizes the need for accountability regarding the withdrawal.
