Saudi Arabia Still Considering BRICS Membership, Says Economy Minister

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia is currently evaluating its potential membership in the BRICS bloc, according to Faisal Al-Ibrahim, the country’s minister of Economy and planning, in an interview with Bloomberg on Monday.

BRICS, initially formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded with South Africa joining in 2011. In January 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates became full members, with Indonesia set to join in January 2025.

“We’ve been invited to the BRICS, similar to how we’ve been invited to many other multilateral platforms in the past historically,” Al-Ibrahim said during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We assess many different aspects of it before a decision is made and right now, we are in the middle of that.”

The minister highlighted Saudi Arabia’s ongoing focus on encouraging global dialogue.

The kingdom, along with five other nations, was invited to join BRICS during the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August 2023. However, Argentina chose to decline the invitation after President Javier Milei opposed the move, reversing the decision made by his predecessor, Alberto Fernandez.
