Moscow unveils reason for French journalist`s visa prohibition

(MENAFN) Moscow's decision to ban French journalist Benjamin Quenelle from entering the country is a direct response to France's ongoing discrimination against Russian media, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova. In an open letter, Le Monde condemned the ban as a setback for press freedom and called for reconsideration. Zakharova explained that Quenelle's ban was a retaliation for France's refusal to allow a reporter from Komsomolskaya Pravda to work in Paris, citing accusations that the outlet served as a cover for intelligence agents.

The French government has previously targeted Russian media, with President Macron's administration notably barring Russian outlets like RT from attending his 2017 re-election events, accusing them of spreading disinformation. More recent incidents include the rejection of Russian journalists’ credentials during the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the EU has imposed a broad ban on Russian media since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Zakharova criticized France's actions as part of a broader trend of "Russophobia" and urged French media to hold their government accountable. Russia has also accused international press freedom organizations of overlooking attacks on Russian journalists, including alleged targeted killings by Ukraine.
