Trasport Minister: 11,000 Modes Of Public Transportation Will Benefit From 50% Exemption Of Licensing Fees
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, Feb. 7 (Petra)-- According to transport Minister Wissam Tahtamouni, approximately 11,000 public transportation vehicles will profit from the Cabinet's decision to waive 50 percent of the cost of license and permit fees for vehicles operating under the Land Transport Regulatory Commission's jurisdiction.
Approximately 1,000 service vehicles, 1,000 large buses, 4,000 medium buses, and 5,000 taxis are among the beneficiary methods.
The decision is intended to assist operators and lessen their financial strains due to the volatility of oil prices, she said on Jordan television's Sixty Minutes.
She mentioned that those who have paid fees since the start of the year will receive a refund of half of their original amount.
In reference to the Passenger Transport Support Fund, the Minister emphasized that the project will benefit operators, citizens, and the national economy because it will enhance the quality and sustainability of the service by implementing smart services and electronic payment-based transport systems, which guarantee the provision of high-quality transportation services at reasonable prices for both operators and users.
"This model is not new in the public transport sector but is used in many countries around the world," she added, adding that the fund's revenues will come from licensing fees, sector investment, and other mechanisms. Support will initially be provided based on public transportation occupancy rates, and the amount may be high in the early stages of implementation.
Tahtamouni clarified that there is continuous consultation with the appropriate authorities regarding the potential inclusion of transportation vehicles operating within the Greater Amman Municipality and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority in the decision.
According to the Minister, around 24,000 individuals utilize the rapid bus project between Amman and Zarqa every day during the testing phase. When it is fully operational, the number of passengers is anticipated to increase to 50,000.
