US pauses tariffs on Mexican goods following ‘very friendly’ discussion

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has announced a temporary halt to planned tariffs on Mexican goods for one month, following a positive conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. The decision came after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking, with additional tariffs on Chinese goods.

Trump shared that during the "very friendly" discussion with Sheinbaum, the Mexican leader agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers to the northern border to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration. Negotiations will continue, led by high-level US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Sheinbaum confirmed the deployment in a post on X and emphasized a US commitment to addressing the trafficking of weapons into Mexico. Tensions had previously flared over Trump’s accusations of an alliance between Sheinbaum’s government and Mexican crime groups, which she dismissed as false. Sheinbaum also threatened retaliatory tariffs on US imports.

While the tariffs on Mexican goods are paused, tariffs on Canada and China remain in effect. Canada swiftly responded with 25% retaliatory tariffs, while China signaled plans to challenge the measures at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The tariff pause led to some stabilization on Wall Street.
