Google Maps tracks US President Trump on Gulf of Mexico

(MENAFN) google Maps announced that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America once the update is reflected in the US government's Geographic Names System. The tech giant also stated that it would revert the name of Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, back to Denali, as it was known before 2015.

In a post on X, Google explained that it follows a practice of updating names according to official government sources. The Gulf of America name will be visible to US users, while in Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico will remain. Google clarified that when official names differ by country, Maps users will see the local official name, with both names displayed globally.

The changes follow an executive order by US President Donald Trump, who aims to rename landmarks to honor “American Greatness.” The US Interior Department confirmed the update and is working on revising the Geographic Names Information System accordingly.

The change to Mount McKinley, which was named after President William McKinley, will revert to its original indigenous name, Denali, after a 2015 decision by former President Barack Obama to restore the native name.

The Gulf of Mexico, a body of water linked to the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, has been called by its current name for over 400 years. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently suggested renaming North America to “Mexican America,” drawing from a historical map.

Elon Musk, a tech mogul and ally of Trump, humorously suggested renaming the English Channel to the “George Washington Channel” to honor the first US president.
