Ukrainian army goes against Trump on Kursk Region ‘encirclement’

(MENAFN) The Ukrainian General Staff has dismissed reports that its forces are encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region, contradicting U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that “thousands” of Ukrainian soldiers are trapped.

In a statement posted on Telegram on Friday, Ukraine’s military called the claims “false and fabricated by the Russians for Political manipulation.” The statement suggested that Moscow was using the narrative to pressure Kiev and its Western allies but did not mention trump or the U.S. directly. The General Staff insisted that Ukrainian troops were still engaged in combat following a strategic regrouping.

Earlier that day, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Ukrainian forces were in a “very bad and vulnerable position” and urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to spare their lives.

Putin responded by stating that, despite alleged Ukrainian crimes against civilians, Russia was willing to guarantee the safety and humane treatment of any soldiers who surrendered. He called on Kiev to order its troops to lay down their arms.

Trump’s remarks followed a visit by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow, where he delivered details of a proposed 30-day ceasefire. A day before those talks, Putin visited Kursk Region and received a briefing from General Valery Gerasimov, head of the Russian General Staff.

According to Gerasimov, as of Wednesday, Russian forces had reclaimed 86% of the territory seized by Ukraine during its August 2024 offensive. He described the remaining Ukrainian units in the area as largely “isolated” and “encircled.”

Ukraine initially captured the town of Sudzha and several villages during its summer offensive, with President Vladimir Zelensky stating that the operation was meant to strengthen Kiev’s position in future peace negotiations. However, Russian forces quickly halted the advance and have since been retaking lost ground.
