Moscow asks Musk to cooperate on Mars exploration
(MENAFN) Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and chief economic envoy in U.S.-Russia talks, has proposed a joint Mars exploration mission with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Dmitriev emphasized that such a partnership would benefit humanity and strengthen space cooperation between the two nations.
His proposal came in response to Musk’s recent announcement that SpaceX plans to launch its first Mars mission in 2026 using the Starship spacecraft. Musk also revealed that the mission would carry a Tesla humanoid robot, Optimus, and that human landings on Mars could begin as early as 2029.
“Shall 2029 be the year of a joint U.S.-Russia mission to Mars, @elonmusk? Our minds & technology should serve the glory of humanity, not its destruction,” Dmitriev wrote on X. He also pointed out that 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first-ever joint space mission between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
Musk has yet to respond publicly to the proposal, but the idea has received positive reactions from X users.
The invitation comes amid a slight warming of relations between Moscow and Washington following years of tensions over the Ukraine conflict. Dmitriev was part of the Russian delegation at last month’s high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia, where both sides expressed interest in reviving economic and diplomatic cooperation.
Despite geopolitical conflicts and Western sanctions, space collaboration between the U.S. and Russia has continued. NASA and Roscosmos recently extended their agreement on cross-flights to the International Space Station (ISS) through 2026.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin also suggested that Russian businesses should work with Musk, particularly once he shifts his focus back to scientific endeavors. Since returning to office, U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Musk to lead the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), a new initiative aimed at reducing bureaucracy, wasteful spending, and corruption in the U.S. government.
