Saudi Arabia awards 1,700MW solar projects to TotalEnergies, EDF renewables
(MENAFN) Consortiums led by TotalEnergies, a global energy company, and EDF Renewables, a renewable energy specialist, have been awarded contracts by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to construct solar parks with a combined capacity of 1,700MW in Saudi Arabia.
According to SPPC, TotalEnergies will develop a 300MW solar park in Rabigh Industrial City in collaboration with the Saudi developer Aljomaih Energy and Water Company. Meanwhile, EDF Renewables will establish two solar parks: the 1,000MWac Al Masaa and the 400MWac Al Henakiyah 2, in partnership with the Chinese State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC).
The contracts were part of a series of agreements unveiled on December 3 during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Riyadh.
The French companies also signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with SPPC for these projects. The solar parks will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) model as part of Round 5 of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). This program, supervised by the Ministry of Energy, aims to achieve a balanced energy mix for electricity generation, with approximately 50% coming from gas and renewable sources each by 2030, and to reduce reliance on liquid fuels in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
