UN General Assembly reiterates two-state solution is "only way to achieve lasting peace"

(MENAFN) The United Nations General Assembly reiterated that a two-state solution is the "only way to achieve lasting peace" in the Middle East, adopting three resolutions to support this vision.

The first resolution, titled "Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine," was passed with 157 votes in favor, eight against (Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and the United States), and seven abstentions (Cameroon, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Paraguay, Ukraine, and Uruguay). It called for urgent efforts to advance the Middle East peace process and urged Israel, the occupying power, to comply with international law, cease settlement activities, and remove settlers from Palestinian territories.

The second resolution, related to the "Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat," was adopted with 101 votes in favor, 27 against, and 42 abstentions. It requested the Secretary-General to continue providing resources and ensuring the division’s effective operations.

The third resolution, on the "Syrian Golan," passed with 97 votes in favor, eight against (Australia, Canada, Israel, Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the UK, and the United States), and 64 abstentions. It reaffirmed that Israel had not complied with Security Council resolution 497 (1981) and declared Israel’s jurisdiction over the occupied Syrian Golan as invalid, calling for its withdrawal from the region.
