Italian population to decline sharply by 2080

(MENAFN) Italy's demographic future appears increasingly uncertain, with projections indicating a substantial decline in population over the coming decades. According to data released by ISTAT, the resident population, which was estimated at approximately 59 million in January 2023, is expected to decrease to 58.6 million by 2030. The decline will continue, with the population projected to fall to 54.8 million by 2050 and further drop to 46.1 million by 2080. These figures highlight a significant downward trend that seems to be entrenched in Italy's demographic landscape.

The population shift is accompanied by a notable change in the age distribution. The ratio of individuals aged 15-64 to those aged 0-14 and 65 and over is shifting, reflecting an aging population with a decreasing number of younger individuals. This trend is particularly pronounced in southern Italy, where the average age is projected to reach 51.5 years by 2050, compared to 50.8 years for the country as a whole.

The projections also suggest that the nature of family structures in Italy will undergo significant changes. Over the next two decades, it is anticipated that around one million new families will be formed, though these families are expected to be more fragmented compared to previous generations. By 2043, fewer than one in four families are predicted to consist of couples with children, while more than one in five families is expected to be childless.

These demographic shifts underscore the challenges Italy faces, including an aging population and changing family dynamics, which will have implications for social policies, economic planning, and the overall structure of Italian society.
