Cabinet highlights Saudi Arabia's efforts against Israeli actions, support for Palestine

(MENAFN) The Saudi Cabinet, chaired by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, convened in Jeddah on Tuesday to discuss the Kingdom's robust efforts aimed at halting what it termed as Israeli aggression against the Palestinian population. According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Cabinet emphasized Saudi Arabia's continuous Political and humanitarian endeavors in collaboration with its allies to curb Israeli military actions targeting Palestinians.

The session underscored the Kingdom's active role in international diplomacy to garner increased global recognition for the State of Palestine. Saudi Arabia has been steadfast in its support, particularly amid the ongoing conflict that has severely impacted Gaza since October 7, 2023. The conflict, backed by American support, has resulted in substantial casualties, including over 125,000 deaths and injuries, predominantly among children and women. The humanitarian crisis has further deepened with widespread destruction and famine affecting countless lives, especially children.

In parallel, the Israeli army and settlers have escalated their attacks in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, resulting in numerous casualties and arrests, as reported by Palestinian authorities. Against this backdrop, the Saudi Cabinet deliberated on international efforts to bolster recognition of Palestine, welcoming recent moves by countries such as Armenia, Slovenia, Spain, Norway, and Ireland to officially recognize Palestine. This development has increased the number of countries recognizing Palestine to 149 out of 193 in the United Nations General Assembly.

Since 2012, Palestine has held a "non-member observer state" status at the UN, yet full membership remains elusive due to the United States' veto power in the UN Security Council. During the session, the Saudi Cabinet also reaffirmed its commitment to providing humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Saudi Arabia has initiated relief campaigns and hosted multiple meetings to explore avenues for ending the devastating conflict in Gaza, demonstrating its proactive stance in supporting Palestinian rights and welfare on the international stage.
