Democrat donors wish for Biden to pull out

(MENAFN) According to Bloomberg's report on Saturday, prominent senior Democrats and donors are engaging in discussions regarding the possibility of replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee ahead of the party's convention in August. This development comes in the aftermath of what the news agency described as a "catastrophic" performance by the 81-year-old president during this week's televised debate with former President Donald Trump.

During the debate, Biden appeared frail and confused, reportedly struggling to articulate his thoughts, often mixing up words and failing to complete sentences, which left Democratic donors and supporters "dismayed," Bloomberg noted. The response among party members and supporters, spanning from Washington to Wall Street, has been characterized by what the news outlet termed as "furious emails" and a growing consensus that replacing Biden may be the Democrats' best chance moving forward.

"Finger-pointing and recriminations" have reportedly gripped all levels of the Democratic Party in the aftermath of the debate, with down-ballot Democrats now facing the task of justifying their continued support for a candidate widely perceived as unfit for office.

Mark Buell, a prominent Democratic donor based in San Francisco, described Thursday's debate as a "wakeup call," indicating that serious discussions about an alternative candidate were now imperative. Buell suggested that if Biden were to step aside, campaign funds could potentially be redirected to support a replacement candidate deemed "plausible and exciting."

Meanwhile, billionaire Mark Cuban criticized Biden's debate performance as "awful" and expressed openness to discussions about replacing him in the race. According to Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, president of the Chief Executive Leadership Institute at Yale University, some executives have already approached prominent Democrats such as the Obamas, the Clintons, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to advocate for considering an alternative to Biden.

The situation underscores a significant internal challenge for the Democratic Party as it navigates the fallout from the debate and grapples with the prospect of recalibrating its strategy heading into the pivotal 2024 election cycle.
