Myanmar ships 181,996 tons of green grams in 2 months

(MENAFN) Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce released data indicating robust export performance for green grams during the early months of fiscal year 2024-25, from April 1 to June 14. Over this period, Myanmar exported a substantial volume of 181,996 tons of green grams, fetching revenue exceeding USD118 million. The ministry's breakdown showed that the majority of these exports, totaling 179,554 tons, were transported via sea routes, with an additional 2,442 tons exported via land borders.

Green grams, a staple crop in Myanmar cultivated in both the winter season starting in October and the rainy season beginning in August, play a pivotal role in the country's agricultural export sector. According to the Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize, and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, Myanmar's green grams find markets in several countries, including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and others.

In the preceding fiscal year 2023-24, Myanmar's green gram exports were particularly lucrative, amounting to 503,970 tons shipped abroad and generating revenue amounting to USD336 million, as reported by official statistics. These figures underscore the economic significance of green grams for Myanmar, contributing significantly to its export earnings and agricultural sector stability.

The consistent export performance of green grams reflects Myanmar's competitive advantage in agricultural production and its ability to meet international demand. As Myanmar continues to navigate economic challenges and opportunities, green grams remain a vital component of its agricultural export strategy, supporting rural livelihoods and contributing to national economic growth.
