Sudan sees intensifying humanitarian crisis amid growing violence

(MENAFN) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a dire update on Monday, highlighting Sudan's descent into chaos and the worsening humanitarian crisis gripping the nation.

According to OCHA, the lives of approximately 800,000 vulnerable individuals -- including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities -- are in jeopardy as ongoing bombing and shelling persist in densely populated areas. These attacks are causing widespread and long-term harm to civilians, severely disrupting essential services that are crucial for their survival.

In the past three months alone, up to 143,000 individuals have been displaced from Al Fasher, the capital of Sudan's North Darfur State, due to clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The escalating violence in and around Al Fasher has resulted in a tragic toll, with more than 300 lives lost, as reported by Ibrahim Abdullah Khatir, director-general of North Darfur State's Health Ministry.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been grappling with deadly clashes between the SAF and RSF, which have claimed over 15,550 lives and displaced over 8.8 million people across the country, according to recent estimates provided by OCHA.

The situation in Sudan remains critical, with the humanitarian fallout deepening amid relentless violence and displacement. OCHA's update underscores the urgent need for international attention and support to mitigate the suffering of millions affected by the conflict, ensure access to essential humanitarian aid, and work towards a sustainable resolution to the crisis plaguing the region.
