Afghanistan reports 48 deaths in traffic accidents in Eid Al-Adha holiday
(MENAFN) During the recently concluded five-day Eid al-Adha holiday in Afghanistan, a total of 48 people lost their lives and more than 160 others were injured in road accidents, according to statements by Hasibullah Mokhtar, the head of the General Directorate of Traffic Police. Mokhtar informed local media that there were 97 road incidents during this period, resulting in approximately 161 injuries and the tragic loss of 48 lives.
The causes attributed to these road accidents include poor road conditions, reckless driving practices, along withs inadequate security measures during travel across the war-torn country. These factors have long been identified as significant contributors to the high incidence of fatal accidents in Afghanistan.
Initially slated for three days, this year's Eid al-Adha holiday was extended to five days, likely contributing to increased traffic and travel during the period. Similar challenges were observed during the four-day Eid al-Fitr holiday in April, where 50 fatalities and 185 injuries were reported in road accidents nationwide.
The figures point out ongoing concerns about road safety in Afghanistan, highlighting the need for enhanced measures to address infrastructure issues, promote responsible driving behavior, and ensure the safety of travelers, especially during festive periods when travel activity typically intensifies.
