Some 29 Dead, 109 Hospitalized Of Spurious Alcohol In India


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, June 20 (KUNA) -- At least 29 Indians lost their lives and 109 more hospitalized following the consumption of spurious alcohol in Kallakurichi district of southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, a government official said on Thursday.
The Press Trust of India said quoting Kallakurichi District Collector M S Prasanth that 29 people were killed and 109 people are being treated in several hospitals in the region following consumption of illicit alcohol.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed sorrow in the tragedy and ordered a high-level inquiry in the matter, expressing shock and sadness over the news. "Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it," he said.
Hundreds of people die in India every year due to the use of illicit liquor made in unlicensed factories. Poor people unable to afford the high cost of licensed liquor are mostly the victims of such tragedies. (end)
