(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 21. The Afghansituation requires close attention, the President of KazakhstanKassym-Jomart Tokayev said at a meeting with foreign ministers ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, Trend reports viaAkorda.

“The situation in Afghanistan requires close attention. It iscrucial to continue efforts to avert a humanitarian crisis andcreate conditions for long-term stabilization. SupportingKazakhstan's initiative to establish a UN Regional Center forSustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan inAlmaty is particularly relevant,” he said.

Tokayev emphasized the need for countries to pay specialattention to the issue of climate change.

“Without urgent proactive measures, this problem could lead ourplanet into a dramatic period of global natural cataclysms. Extremeweather conditions are emerging as one of the world's majorchallenges. Therefore, it is essential to refine the SCO'sapproaches to combating natural disasters. This spring, Kazakhstanexperienced the severe negative impacts of climate changefirsthand. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to yourcountries for their solidarity and assistance during theunprecedented large-scale floods in Kazakhstan. We deeplyappreciate this support,” he added.
